This year’s Irish Race Team heading off to Andorra to compete in the 24rd Trofeu Borrufa Junior Ski Competition are: Alex Ainsworth, Laoise Brennan, Nathan Columb, Meabh Croft, Annemarie Lynch, Laura McCabe, Harry McDowell and Rebecca Power. The support team travelling with the racers includes coaches Ronan Columb and Emer Pisarnik and houseparent Maria Reilly. Following 3 days of training they will compete in 4 days of competition races including Slalom, GS, Super G and Super Combined.

Our Irish Race Team headed off to Andorra early today to compete in the 23rd Trofeu Borrufa Junior Ski Competition. Competing in the U14 category: Meabh Croft, Annemarie Lynch and Nathan Columb. Competing in the U16 category: Rebecca Power, Cameron Columb, Gareth Reilly, Lee Ryan and Cillian Singleton. The support team travelling with the racers includes coaches Brian Byrne, Ronan Columb and Matt Mitchell and houseparent Maria Reilly.
Trofeu Borrufa is an international junior ski competition for children in U14 and U16 age categories, which is held annually in Andorra. Each year approximately 30 countries compete in this prestigious racing event. Each participating country can field a team of up to 10 racers. Andorra, as host nation and neighbouring Spain and France are allowed to send 2 teams.
Disciplines include: Slalom (SL), Giant Slalom (GS), Super G (SG) and Super combined (SC)
SAI, the governing body for national and international competitive snowsports select the team from the list of forwarded nominees. SAI normally announce the team in December. Based on SAI guidelines, the Ski Club of Ireland put names forward for team selection using the following criteria:
– Availability for the competition ( Dates are normally around end of January)
– Training attendance record
– Participation in the club End of Season Races
– Participation in the Irish Open Championships
– Participation in 2 summer away races including snowdome races
– Attendance at the SCI training camp on snow
– Behaviour & Attitude
– Fitness
– Coaches’ Report
– Consistency & Improvement
To comply with FIS regulations and competition rules each selected racer must have the following:
Skis – Slalom & GS & (SG for U16 category – these can be rented)*
Helmet with chin guard
Shin guards
Race suit, ski shorts or zip off salopettes (optional,)
FIS race Insurance ( for the duration of the races and training days)
A small ski maintenance kit including wax, file, iron, vices, etc.
If selected for the team, we would advise holding off on purchasing anything new as some racers in the club may have skis, race suits etc that can be borrowed/swopped/ bought 2nd hand.
